Visual Art

In the beginning, God, the original Creator, brought order to chaos. This is the foundation of every visual art class at Augustine. Our goal is for students to learn to find order in the chaos around them, and then to create works that reflect and communicate this message of redemption to the world.

Visual art at Augustine is interdisciplinary by design. Students encounter works of art that fit the historical themes of their studies for the year, and art assignments weave together ideas from math, science, and literature. Looking at art is an essential exercise for students in every grade. It builds critical thinking skills and teaches them to see how an artist carefully assembles a composition using the elements of art and the principles of design.

Drawing is the building block of all the arts, so our curriculum focuses heavily on helping students draw accurately and with ease. Most lessons begin with drawing or include an element of it, and students are also introduced to a variety of media, including painting, printmaking, and sculpture. In their senior year, students have the opportunity to study ceramics and stained glass.
