The Arts at Augustine
At Augustine, the arts are woven into the life of the school. We believe students flourish when they learn to create, perform, and appreciate beauty. Through music, drama, and visual art, students develop discipline, imagination, and the confidence to share their gifts with others.
From the early grades through graduation, every student receives thoughtful instruction in music and studio art, learns an orchestral instrument, participates in choir, and studies drama. These experiences help students discover new abilities, work together, and express themselves with clarity and purpose.
Visual Art
Visual art at Augustine is interdisciplinary in nature. Partly because students are introduced to works of art that fit the historical theme of their studies for the year, but also because art assignments weave together themes from math, science, and literature. Looking at art is an important exercise for students in all grades in which they develop critical thinking skills and learn to see the ways that an artist carefully assembles a composition using the elements of art and principles of design.
The building block for all arts is drawing, and students partake in a curriculum that focuses heavily on learning to draw accurately and with ease. While most lessons begin with drawing or have an element of drawing, students are also exposed to a variety of media, including painting, printmaking, and sculpture. In their senior year, students have the opportunity to study ceramics and stained glass.
Drama
Drama helps students find their voice. Through acting, memorization, movement, and collaboration, students learn to communicate clearly and confidently. They begin to see literature not just as text, but as characters and stories brought to life on stage.
Students participate in class performances as well as larger productions beginning at the Upper School. Dialectic students put on a musical, and Rhetoric students perform a Shakespeare play every Spring. They can also explore backstage roles such as costume design, set building, and technical support.
Choir
Choral singing begins in the early grades and continues through Upper School. Students learn to read music, develop healthy vocal technique, and sing with accuracy and expression. They experience the joy of creating something beautiful or all-school events.
Orchestra
Every Upper School student studies an orchestral instrument as part of their regular coursework. They gain musical literacy, practice disciplined skill-building, and learn what it means to contribute to a larger ensemble. Whether beginners or experienced musicians, students grow in technique, teamwork, and the satisfaction that comes from shared performance.
